[New York]: No publisher/printer, [1951]. 16 pp., plus wrappers. [1951]. Water stain to top cover, not affecting text. Double side stapled, with one of staples missing. Considering the cheap paper that was used, this copy is in very good condition. Original prospectus/program for the inaugural season of The Living Theatre, an effort of Judith Malina and Julian Beck: The initial season's performances took place in the Cherry Lane Theatre in Greenwich Village. Included are "On Picasso's Desire and T.S. Eliot's Sweeney Agonistes" by Judith Malina; "Reply" by William Carlos Williams; and "In response to a request for a manifesto on music, 1952" by John Cage. There are advertisements and lists of "Who's Who in the Cast." In the 1950s, the group was among the first in the U.S. to produce the work of influential European playwrights, such as Bertolt Brecht (In The Jungle of Cities in New York, 1960) and Jean Cocteau, as well as modernist poets such as T. S. Eliot and Gertrude Stein. Based in a variety of small New York locations which were frequently closed due to financial problems or conflicts with city authorities, they helped to originate Off-Off-Broadway and Off-Broadway as significant forces in U.S. theater.
