The group was formed to perpetuate and encourage the knowledge and appreciation of African
oriented dance. Black Dimensions also perceived dance as an excellent medium for the
expression of historical and cultural information.
The Oakland-San Francisco Bay Area has long been a center of African dance, since its fledging
search for roots in the revolutionary 1960s of the Black Arts Movement-West.
